Appaloosa Horses - Coat Patterns

The majority of Appaloosa Horses keeps changing their base color over the years, but keep the dark spots and grow some extra spots. Mostly changes occur during the first two years. Appaloosas come in different coat patterns, and no two are alike. It's impossible to foresee the color of the foal. To understand the Appaloosa coloring process will take many years of intense observation. The basic color patterns of Appaloosa Horses are:

Black horse (or any color), white over hips, with black or dark spots;
White horse with black, red or different spots (called a Leopard);
Black (or any color), with white snowflake spots;
Blue or red roan over entire body with varnish marks on face, more or less spots on body;

Weight: ranges from 950 to 1250 pounds.

Height: the minimum height is 14 hands (56 inches), there is no maximum height, though height and weight should be proportioned.

Longevity: more than 20 years.

Appaloosa Horses - Preservation

In 1938 Claude Thompson organized the first Appaloosa Horse Club for the preservation and improvement of the breed diminishing after the Civil War. The restoration process was slow and people used Appaloosas as working horses only. Gradually more people got interested in Appaloosa Horses, and soon there was nothing the Appaloosa couldn't do. They were special with a great color, a will to work, a social personality and intelligence to perform any task. Yet still today the breed endures many hardships. The crossbreeding with the American Quarter Horse is causing the severe loss in great disposition, versatility, and color of Appaloosa Horses.
