Appaloosa Horses - Breeding
Breeders' interest in Appaloosa Horses is for pleasure riding, trail riding, agility, speed, and brain. Breeders want athletic horses with grace and beauty, smart, pretty, and colorful. Also Appaloosas should have height over 16 hands. The main goal is to produce Appaloosa Horses that will excel not only in the show arena, but also in all areas from working cattle to being your lifelong companion.
Most of the Appaloosa foals are born in spring through autumn. All foals for sale should be well adapted to people. They are wormed and vaccinated at two months of age with booster vaccine given at three months of age. The foals are weaned at 4-5 months of age. Foals should run together with the herd, enjoying natural environment: meadows, woods, steep hills, deep valleys, where they can grow up strong, well coordinated and agile. An Appaloosa horse generally reaches maturity at 5 years.
Appaloosa Horses - Indian Shuffle
The "Indian shuffle" is a birthright of Appaloosas as is their spots and striped hooves. It is a lateral gait. The legs on the same side of the horse move together. The pace is broken as each hoof hits the ground a fraction ahead of the other which results in four beats in the walk. The shuffle doesn't have much elevation. The motions of Appaloosas Horses are absorbed in their back and loins giving the rider a smooth, gliding ride.
